Before You Play

Online casino games can be great fun but there’s always an element of risk involved. Before You Play is your trusted companion, offering practical tips and advice to ensure your gaming experience stays both safe and enjoyable.

Take a Look at Before You Play

The Beginner’s Guide to Playing Online Casino Games

While it’s great to have so many casino games to choose from, picking one that’s right for you can sometimes be a little tricky- especially if you’re a complete beginner. Learning more about the types of casino games available can make things a whole lot easier, so let us introduce you to what’s on offer.

From thrilling, fast-paced chance games to more tactical, skill-based options, the best online casinos have it all. Whether you’re keen to play slots, poker, baccarat, roulette, or even live casino games, you’re sure to find a site that fits the bill at TopRatedCasinos.

Let’s take a look at the various gambling games you can play online:

Slot Games

Slots make up the majority of most online casinos’ game collections, and with good reason. From low stakes classic slots to huge progressive jackpot video slots, there’s an endless number of possibilities for both casual gamblers and high rollers. Playing online slots is simple: bet, spin, and wait to see if you’ve landed a winning payline.

As time has gone by, slots developers have come up with weirder and wackier themes, as well as thrilling gameplay mechanics to keep players engaged. Watch out for the following features:

  • Avalanche reels – winning combinations are replaced with new symbols for chained wins.
  • Wilds – these symbols substitute for all others and sometimes expand to cover the entire reel.
  • Free spins rounds – extra goes at no cost to you, usually triggered by landing a certain number of scatter symbols.
  • Megaways – a special mechanic where the number of symbols per reel can change with each spin, giving you more ways to win.
  • Multipliers – unlock a boosted payout when you activate a multiplier.
  • Gamble – often found on classic slots, gamble gives you a chance to double or nothing your win.

Be sure to look out for information on the RTP rate and volatility. RTP, or return to player, is effectively the slot’s payout percentage over the course of a theoretical number of spins, while volatility is a measurement of the size and frequency of the game’s payouts.

A casino classic, online roulette players bet on where the ball will land once it’s dropped into the spinning roulette wheel. The simplest bets are red or black, odd or even and high or low, but there’s a whole host of other betting options to keep online roulette interesting.

As well as the traditional European and American roulette variations, you can expect to find exciting variations such as multi-wheel roulette and double ball roulette at the best online casinos.

One of the most exciting casino games, the aim of online blackjack is the same as the real thing: get as close to 21 as possible without going bust. As you can choose whether or not to draw cards, there’s a skill element which means your decisions influence your success.

Players who fancy mixing it up a bit can choose from variations such as Blackjack Switch and Pontoon. You’ll be up against the dealer whichever title you play, so make your moves wisely!

Another game where luck isn’t the only deciding factor, online poker players must try to make the highest ranking hand possible to beat the dealer. From Texas Hold’em and Casino Hold’em to Caribbean Stud and Pai Gow poker, there are plenty of poker games on offer at top UK casino sites.

Famous as James Bond’s game of choice, online baccarat is as straightforward as it gets – your aim is to get a hand total closer to nine than the dealer. All bets are played before any cards are drawn, so this game comes down entirely to chance.

Another popular casino game, this is essentially a combination of poker and virtual slot machines where you just need to get a ranking hand to win. Video poker players are dealt five cards and can swap cards to make a stronger hand. Variations like Deuces Wild and Joker Poker feature wild cards, which make it easier to land a winning combination.

There are no cards in this casino favourite – instead, you’re betting on the roll of two dice. Another game of pure luck, online craps players can choose from a wide range of possible bets when trying to land a win.

This ancient Chinese game is alive in kicking in casinos. Like craps, online sic bo is a game of chance where you wager on the roll of dice. This game uses three dice rather than two, opening up a whole host of possible outcomes.

Similar to lottery and bingo games, keno players place wagers on numbers from 1 to 80. 20 numbers are then picked at random, after which you receive a payout if you’ve managed to guess correctly. Fingers crossed!

How to Play Online Casino Games

  1. Compare top UK casinos

Much like the number of online casino games available to you, the number of online casinos that host them is huge. Each casino brings something different to the table, so it can be hard to figure out which one is perfect for you. To help make things a little easier, we’ve hand-picked only the most reliable, trustworthy UK brands, with some of the best games, promos and bonus offers. Mobile players can join in too – all our casinos are mobile friendly!

  2. Register

Once you’ve picked your favourite online casino, you’ll need to sign up. The exact signup process will vary between casinos – while some ask for contact details and personal information to verify your identity, others will ask you to provide documentation to prove your age. We only recommend casinos that hold a valid UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) licence, so you can be sure that your information will be safe and secure. Don’t forget to opt in if you want to claim your new player welcome bonus!

  3. Deposit and claim your welcome bonus

If you want to play real money games you’re going to need a bankroll to work with, so head over to the cashier page to make a deposit to your account. Most top casinos will also reward you with a generous welcome bonus, which is usually activated when you make your first deposit. Our top casinos offer a great selection of banking options, from traditional debit card payments to e-wallets like Paypal, Skrill and Neteller, so there’s something for everyone.

  4. Practice in free mode

So you’ve signed up and made a deposit- now you’re ready to get into some gameplay. Before you put your own cash on the line, you might want to take a spin on free online casino games – especially if you’re a new player. These games are free to play and are great to familiarise yourself with a game’s rules, interface and controls if you aren’t ready to put real money on the line.

  5. Set your stakes and play

Time to place your bets! Pick out a game, set your wager and hope for a win. The best casino sites have a huge collection of titles to choose from, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. We’d recommend starting out with low stakes tables, but there are high stakes games for high rollers. Whatever your preference, we’re sure you’ll have a blast playing at our recommended casinos – enjoy!

Casino Card Games

Many players are drawn to the rich histories of the various card games on offer at online casinos, whether you’re playing against the house or your fellow gamblers. Throw in variations of each and you’re spoilt for choice — we’ve explained three of the most popular casino card games below.

Blackjack

The aim of online blackjack is the same as the real thing: stick or twist to get as close to 21 as possible without going bust. You’ll be playing against the dealer, whose actions are determined by the value of their hand. As you can choose whether or not to draw cards, there’s an element of skill here which means your decisions influence your success — that’s one reason why it’s the most popular casino card game around. By applying basic blackjack strategy, you can push the house edge right down — single-deck blackjack has one of the highest returns of all casino table games with a house edge of roughly 0.5%.

There’s plenty on offer for those who like to mix things up. Alongside variations like Blackjack Switch and Pontoon, you’ll find varied rulesets across blackjack games, allowing you to make extra side bets, such as betting on the occurrence of a pair. In some blackjack games, you can also buy insurance when the dealer’s face-up card is an ace — if they hit blackjack, you’ll get a 2-to-1 payout. Once you’ve got basic strategy under your belt, you can incorporate these side bets into your gameplay for some extra excitement.

21+3 and Perfect Pairs

21+3 and Perfect Pairs are some other popular variants you might encounter. These side bets come with a higher house edge, but you’ll stand a chance at a bigger win compared to standard blackjack’s even-money payouts. The payouts given below are just examples and will vary by casino. The house edge is affected by the payouts and the number of decks used, so it can run from around 3% up to 11% and higher.

The Perfect Pairs side bet uses the player’s cards and is won when you’re dealt the following:

  • Mixed pair (same value, different suit and colour) – pays 5-to-1
  • Coloured pair (same value, same colour) – pays 12-to-1
  • Perfect pair (two of the same card) – pays 25-to-1

For 21+3, the player’s cards and the dealer’s face-up card are used. The following combinations are paid out:

  • Flush (all cards same suit) – pays 5-to-1
  • Straight (consecutive cards) – pays 10-to-1
  • Three of a kind (same value, different suits) – pays 30-to-1
  • Straight flush (consecutive cards, same suit) – pays 40-to-1
  • Suited triple (three of the same card) – pays 100-to-1

Poker

Another game where luck isn’t the only deciding factor, online poker players must try to make the highest ranking hand possible to swipe the pot from their opponents. Skill makes a big difference to your chances of winning — whether you’re holding the nuts or nothing at all, you still need to outwile the other seats at the table with well-timed checks, calls, raises, and bluffs.

Texas Hold’em is the most popular variant of the game. Players are each dealt two cards face down, and after a round of betting, three community cards are dealt face up — that’s called the flop. There’s another round of bets before the turn card is dealt, more bets, and finally the river card.

The player who makes the best five-card hand using any combination of their cards and the community cards is the winner. From best to worst, the card rankings are royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair, and high card.

You’ll find many other poker variants at the best online casinos. As well as Texas Hold’em, there are many games played against the house, like Caribbean Stud poker or three- and five-card draw.

Poker Tournaments

Fancy an even bigger challenge? Why not enter a knock-out poker tournament? It’s a thrilling way to compete against potentially thousands of others to prove your worth and take home a prize. Typically, players must buy in for a set fee and are given a stack of tournament chips to use. After that, it’s all about survival — lose your chips and you’re out, until just one player remains at the end of the final round.

Rules and prizes vary between tournaments. Go out early and you might be able to rebuy for another chance. The prize pools often consist of entry fees, and can be split between players or winner takes all. If you’ve never played in a poker tournament before, look for a freeroll as these tournaments cost nothing to enter and are a great way to get your feet wet.

Baccarat

Famous as James Bond’s game of choice and massively popular in Macau, online baccarat is a straightforward card game played against the house. Your aim is simple: bet on which hand you think will get closest to nine. All wagers are placed before any cards are drawn, so the game comes down entirely to chance.

The most common format played is punto banco, where you can bet on the ‘player’ or the ‘banker’. The number cards 2–9 are worth their face value, while the 10, J, Q, and K cards are all worth 0. Aces are worth 1. Only the units digit is counted in the value, so a total hand value of 13 is worth 3.

After the bets are placed, two cards are dealt to each hand. If either hand has a value of 8 or 9 — called a natural — the winner is announced and a new round begins. If not, a set of rules called the ‘tableau’ is used to decide whether the player and banker hands should draw another card. The winner is then announced and bets are paid out.

Baccarat’s house edge is attractively low: 1.06% on banker bets and 1.24% on player bets. We’d discourage you from betting on a tie as the house edge is significantly higher — 14.4% on 8-to-1 payouts and 4.85% on 9-to-1 payouts.

New Casino Games

Software developers aren’t ones to slack off; they’re always coming up with new casino games to satiate players with something fresh. Although one could argue developers are reinventing the wheel with classic casino table games like roulette or blackjack, new titles often bring innovative features, smoother gameplay, or just a fresh coat of paint.

New Blackjack

Premier Blackjack with Lucky Lucky is one of the newest blackjack titles available, released in late 2021. It’s developed by Switch Studios, part of industry veteran Microgaming, and lets players place side bets, double down, and split hands. There’s also Left Hand Mode and Turbo Mode for those who prefer quicker hands.

If you’re looking for something a little more unique, Quantum Blackjack Plus from Playtech gives players a chance for a bigger win with random stackable multipliers available in every hand.

New roulette titles don’t come around that often, but it’s worth it when they do. Microgaming’s Multifire Roulette, developed by its Switch Studios subsidiary, uses the European format but adds exciting features like Random 3, where three straight-up numbers are given a multiplier every round.

A more unusual roulette title is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Roulette, developed by Electric Elephant and Relax Gaming. It’s American roulette in the style of the iconic game show, and there’s also a bonus round where you’ll climb the ladder to win extra prizes.

New live dealer games hit the market fairly often as the category grows in popularity. Evolution Gaming, undisputed kings of the genre, recently released Bac Bo Live — an exhilarating combination that replaces the cards of baccarat with the dice of sic bo.

You can enjoy more than just table games at live casinos though. Race For Cash from Quik Gaming combines live action with the thrill of sports betting and slots, where players bet on a virtual racetrack and watch the cars duke it out to the finish line, picking up multipliers along the way.

Play Live Dealer Games Online

For some, playing against a computer just doesn’t cut it. If you’re a fan of more interactive gaming, a live dealer casino is the perfect solution. Live casino games are streamed in real-time from specially built studios, with a human dealer running the game just like in a bricks-and-mortar casino.

You can view and chat with the dealer, and some casinos even let players chat among themselves thanks to the live chat feature. Whilst live blackjack and live roulette are the most popular games, you’ll be able to pretty much every table game with a live dealer at the top casinos.

These games provide the most immersive casino experience you can find online, but the extra cost of hosting these games means they often have a higher minimum bet limit than other online casino games.

Enjoy Free Casino Games

Are you a fan of casino games but don’t fancy wagering real money? Good news – you can play online without spending a penny. Virtually every online casino has free demo versions of its games, with the exception of live dealer titles.

Whether you want to play free slots or just fancy a game of roulette and blackjack for fun, free casino games give you the chance to play online without dipping into your own pocket.

Free demos are ideal if you just want to play casino games for fun, but they’re also handy if you want to try out a new game or give your strategy a test run before you jump in with real money. You won’t necessarily get to access the same bonus rounds and extra features when you play free casino games, but they certainly give you a taste of the real gaming experience.

How Do Casino Games Work?

It’s all well and good simply playing casino games online, but you probably want to have some idea of what goes on behind the scenes. Let’s take a look.

RNG

UK-licenced casinos use random number generator (RNG) technology in their animated games. This basically means that each outcome – which cards are drawn, where the roulette ball lands and so on— is completely random, unpredictable and independent. This gives all players the same fair chances of winning.

Live dealer games aren’t controlled by RNG, but they are audited by independent bodies to ensure fairness.

House Edge

The house edge is the estimated average profit a casino expects to make from all wagers placed on a game over time. So if a game has a house edge of 5%, the casino expects to make £5 for every £100 gambled, on average. The house edge is different for all games, with blackjack essentially offering the best odds of winning thanks to its average house edge of 0.5%.

For example, the banker bet in baccarat has an edge of around just 1%, while the edge for the red or black bet in American roulette is over 5%. However, no matter how small, house edge means that the casino always has a slight advantage over the player.

RTP

The return to player (RTP) percentage is the opposite of house edge – it’s the theoretical percentage of returns you would expect to make over time from a particular game. Let’s say the RTP of a slot title is 97%- in theory, you would expect to win £97 back for every £100 you wager.

It’s important to remember that the house edge and RTP are theoretical, and do not translate into odds of winning on any given spin or wager. It’s possible for players to make large wins in the short term, and even to profit over a long play period if you get extremely lucky.

On the flip side, there’s also the chance that your returns will be well below the RTP at any given point. But it’s useful to know so that you have a rough idea of how you might expect a game to play out.

Claim a Bonus for Online Casino Games

The best online casinos are on hand to give your bankroll a tidy boost with an assortment of enticing deposit bonuses. There’s a whole range of great offers out there, from welcome bonus matched deposits and no deposit free spins to regular promotions like cash backs.

These bonuses aren’t available for all casino games, in fact some are restricted for use only on certain titles, such as free spins for Starburst. You should also read the small print for other terms and conditions that make it difficult to turn any bonus winnings into cash profits – wagering requirements, maximum win limits and time restrictions are just some of the obstacles you’ll have to contend with.

If you’re looking for a particularly player-friendly bonus, check out our rankings of the best new online casinos. The bonus value may typically be smaller, but new casinos typically offer no wagering bonuses and low wagering requirements as a means to differentiate themselves from the more established casinos.

Play Casino Games on your Mobile

Do you want to play online casino games on the go? You’re in luck! The top brands on our list all offer mobile casino games available on your mobile and tablet. You can play through a mobile-friendly website or a gambling mobile app; the best casino sites have created these for iOS and Android.

However you choose to play mobile casino games, you’ll get to enjoy the same games libraries and exciting casino bonuses, so there’s never-ending access to a whole world of casino fun at your very fingertips.

Casino Games Software Developers

Behind every casino game is a hardworking developer — there are loads around, each with their own specialities, but here are some names you’ll encounter most often.

NetEnt

A heavyweight in the industry, NetEnt has been around for almost three decades and has created some of the most beloved slots titles of all time, including Starburst and Gonzo’s Quest — two titles frequently eligible for free spins welcome bonuses. The company also makes casino table games and live dealer titles through its NetEnt Live brand.

Evolution Gaming focuses on one thing and one thing only: live casino games. It’s the premier choice for live dealer players, offering a huge array of real dealer action from live roulette to game shows and everything in between. The company also brought NetEnt under its wing in 2020 through a $2.1 billion acquisition.

Another name well-known to slots fans is Play’n GO. Famous titles include the ever-popular Book of Dead and the rest of the Rich Wilde series, and Rise of Olympus. This developer is known for its beautifully rendered games taking place in a myriad of times and settings. Play’n GO also has several branded slots, including tie-ins with Alice Cooper and Kiss.

Yggdrasil is a little younger than some of the other names of this list, founded roughly a decade ago in 2013. The developer creates a broad range of slots and table games, with famous titles such as Valley of the Gods and Vikings Go Berzerk.

Part of the Evolution Gaming family, Big Time Gaming develops colourful, engaging slots like Apollo Pays and Diamond Fruits. The company invented the Megaways and Megaclusters slots mechanics, where reels and symbols expand to give players more routes to success.

Casino Game Licensing

While all online casinos need to hold appropriate licences to operate — and we exclusively recommend fully licensed casinos — did you know that game developers are subject to the same requirements?

Bodies like the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) and Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) are responsible for such licensing, and software developers must meet stringent regulations around their operations to receive the seal of approval.

There are also various third parties involved in auditing and self-regulation of the iGaming industry. eCOGRA, iTech Labs, and Gaming Laboratories International are three of the best-known names. They carry out checks around security and quality assurance, as well as ensuring the RTPs of games are accurate and that the random number generators (RNGs) that power them are operating correctly. When you bet on titles from a developer approved by one of these auditors, you know you’re playing a fair game.

  • Selected slots games have RTPs as high as 99%, which means you have a pretty good chance at landing some returns. If you’re after card games, blackjack is your best bet, with a house edge as low as 0.5%. Of course, these RTPs are theoretical, and don’t technically increase your chances of winning, but they do mean that, in the long run, these games are more likely to pay out.

  • Yes, you’ll need to be 18 to play at any UK-licensed casino site, even if you’re playing for free.
